Charlotte Burgard - @c.y.ceramics
Kentucky native, Charlotte Burgard is a multidisciplinary artist and graduate of the University of Kentucky completing a BFA in Studio Art, BA in Art Administration, and Minor in Art History. Their work combines ceramics and fiber in some pieces to explore the complementary and juxtaposed qualities of both materials. The fragility of the ceramic forms with the tenuous appearance of crocheted fiber expresses through visual metaphors how the connections we make hold us together as they become all the more important in moments of tension. Their current art practice is inspired by the ephemeral moments found in memories and nature, with a hand crafted, functional approach.
Tenuous Connections, 2023
Tenuous Connections hangs on the wall like a crocheted blanket, broken into pieces and reconnected. The interplay of fragile crocheted ceramic coils and the fiber holding it together, beckons viewers to contemplate the profound implications of the tenuous yet precious connections we have to each other through craft and fiber traditions. Creating visual suspense through tension on the faux strength of the ceramic stitches to demonstrate the critical reliance of each link on the others; the need to create lasting connections, as the strength of the whole depends on the connection between the individuals.
Constructed Memory, Risograph print 2023
Familiar image, yet layered with edits and rose tint. The sensation viewing old photographs of ourselves or fascination with anecdotes which we lived but don’t remember indulges in the collective memory of how we once were. The intricate process to create this image explores how fading memories perpetuated by our own recollections, combine into greater images and questions how time alters our view of our younger selves.
42160, Crocheted Landscape
42160 explores the nuanced imperfect connections between materials, memories, and the deep-rooted comfort of home. I am interested in capturing and revisiting the short moments of security and unpredictability that are stitched together into the larger landscape of life.
Tenuous Connections
Tenuous Connections hangs on the wall like a crocheted blanket, broken into pieces and reconnected. The interplay of fragile crochet and rigid ceramic, beckons viewers to contemplate the profound implications of the tenuous yet precious. It is an invitation to explore the fragile yet enduring threads that link us to one another and the strength of craft traditions.
Ripple Frozen - Video and Ceramic Installation
The fond memories that I have at Laurel Lake stay with me. This collection of seven vases are inspired by the concept of a splash that will never reach a ripple and as if frozen in air.
Memory Jam
Memory Jam, reflects on tradition’s lasting impression on identity. The nostalgia of collecting blackberries that surrounded my childhood house and making blackberry jam with my family connects me to them.
Securely Stitched
These two sculptural vessels were created by adapting crochet technique to ceramic coil building. Building with the ceramic coils in rows how one would crochet a round garment, I crocheted unravelable sculptures. The ephemerality of crochet stitches and the ease with which they unravel have been replaced with a different fragility. The movements of the ceramic crocheted vessels have been frozen, and the looseness of the stitch’s appearance is juxtaposed by their true stability.
Pulling apart
Pulling Apart is a sculpture emphasizing the coalescing halves of the bubbling ceramic. The elastic force that draws them together pushes the rounded shape of the ceramic through the weave of the crocheted fabric that encapsulates them
