42160, Crocheted Landscape

2023, 7ft 4in. (tall) x 7ft 6in. (long) x 2in.  Natural and synthetic second-hand fibers, soda-fired ceramic, printed photo, sewing pins.

42160 explores the nuanced imperfect connections between materials, memories, and the deep-rooted comfort of home.  I am interested in capturing and revisiting the short moments of security and unpredictability that are stitched together into the larger landscape of life.  This piece was inspired by the soothing embrace of home and the familiar sense of belonging I find amidst the vast landscapes, as in the photograph at the center of the tapestry.  Each block of color is loosely crocheted fibers that were gifted or second-hand, already infused with memories of their own, with the majority sourced from my family.  The yarn captures the soft memories and comfort of the place.  The expansive horizon that stretches across the land serves as a powerful anchor, symbolizing permanence and bearing the tension of the earth and the pull of the sky. At each end, the horizon is stretched and tethered on either end by the delicate crocheted ceramic coils, expressing my connection between the crochet and my time in 42160.

The second perspective of 42160 shows more detail of the layers of loose crochet that create depth and texture.  The ceramic pieces anchor the fiber and create tension throughout the fabric. The ceramic pieces were soda-fired, giving them a mixed oxidized earthy and green glassy finish.  The ceramic pieces crocheted in, create tension throughout the fabric.  This tapestry was influenced by earlier works of Amanda Salov and made increasingly personal through materials that connect to the comfort of my home and cherished familial craft traditions.
