Pulling apart

2023, 9in. x 14in. x 6in. Ceramic and elastic thread.

Pulling Apart is a sculpture emphasizing the coalescing halves of the bubbling ceramic.  The elastic force that draws them together pushes the rounded shape of the ceramic through the weave of the crocheted fabric that encapsulates them.  The force pulling the two halves together opposes the force that is pulling them apart, creating the appearance that the surface of the ceramic is bulging through the gaps in the crocheted netting. The theme of opposing forces influenced the finishes of the two halves, one having a cool steely finish that highlights the smooth rounded surfaces, and the other being a warm soft green that emphasizes the malleable appearance of the ceramic bubbles.  The connecting fibers keeping the two halves together outweighing the opposing directions of movement expressed by the sculpture echoes the importance of connection.
